APESMA – Professional Engineers together

APESMA was originally known as the Association of Professional Engineers, Australia, and was first registered in 1948. Today, professional engineers remain the largest profession within the Association.

APESMA’s mission is:

“To protect and advance the employment, social and economic interests of members.”

With strength in numbers and access to information and resources, we are able to work hard towards maximising the employment conditions and career advancement of our member engineers. This is particularly important in the current industrial relations climate.

Contracts of employment

A large number of engineers are employed on individual contracts of employment. The Association is skilled in advising members what should be contained in these contracts and how better conditions can be negotiated.

Professional registration

APESMA provides members, who wish to gain or continue their NPER registration, with a reduced registration fee.

Continuing Professional Development

Chifley Business School, an initiative of APESMA, offers Short Courses that are recognised by Engineers Australia for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) purposes. For information on Short Courses, Frontline Management Training and our technology-based MBA, visit www.chifley.edu.au.

Remuneration surveys

There are, quite simply, no better, or any more up-to-date guides on remuneration for engineers.

APESMA conducts the Professional Engineer Remuneration Survey twice yearly and the Graduate Engineer Employment Survey annually. With this information to hand, individuals can place themselves exactly in their profession, and can negotiate from a much more knowledgeable and powerful position.

Construction Induction Course - Basic OH&S Induction Scheme (formerly Red Card)

It is now a requirement for all personnel entering a construction site in Victoria to have undertaken appropriate occupational health & safety training. Accordingly APESMA, in conjunction with Engineers Australia and ACEA have developed a training course for professionals to comply with OH&S requirements. For more information, visit http://www.apesma.asn.au/construction/.

Local Government Engineers Association (NSW)

The Local Government Engineers’ Association (LGEA) is a Branch of APESMA and is the largest local government group within the national Association.

The LGEA represents APESMA’s NSW members working within local government, on matters relating to their salaries and working conditions.

Awards

Professional Engineers may be covered by a range of Federal or State industrial instruments. Visit the Federal Awards page or the Market rates page for the latest market rates information, or contact your Branch office for advice and information on NAPSA's (formerly state awards).

International Employment

Is your degree recognised overseas? The Washington Accord is an agreement between the bodies responsible for accrediting professional engineering degree programs in each of the signatory countries.

It recognises the substantial equivalency of programs accredited by those bodies and means that graduates of accredited programs in any of the signatory countries be recognised by the other countries.

APESMA can provide members working overseas with advice on employment contracts, salaries and/or contract rates, working conditions, taxation and other issues relating to overseas placement.

For more information, see the Working and Living Overseas Guide in the Members Only section of the APESMA website.

Contact us

APESMA has offices and staff in all capital cities and members have ready access to assistance and advice wherever you are located.

A tongue-in-cheek definition of engineering:

"The art of modelling materials that are not fully understood, into shapes that cannot be precisely analysed, so as to withstand forces that cannot be properly assessed, in such a way that those around have no reason to suspect the extent of the ignorance."
