CASE STUDIES
A career saved
A disenchanted graduate was about to resign from
his first professional position and leave the profession. Problems with hours of
work, tasks outside his expertise, late superannuation and irregular pay periods
had become too much to bear. APESMA negotiated a financial settlement, plus all
legal entitlements and organised a senior professional to give career counseling
and support - and a career was saved.
Wrapping up the right package
A manager approached APESMA for information on
market rates to improve an offer by a potential employer. APESMA staff confirmed
that the majority of employees in that type of role had company cars. The member
cited this information in bargaining, gained the job and a company car thanks to
APESMA.
Professionals in action
Professionals seeking to improve their
opportunities for leave to attend professional development activities called an
APESMA members meeting, formulated a claim and presented their claim in
enterprise bargaining. One week’s additional leave for professional
development was achieved.
Moving up and on
When a member resigned his employment to take up
another job offer, the employer sought to impose a restraint of trade clause
from his original employment contract and threatened to hold onto his accrued
entitlements. APESMA staff provided the member with written legal advice, which
enabled the member to productively discuss the matter with his employer and to
achieve an amicable separation, with full entitlements.
